Tim Budden solo exhibition

2 0 2 3 .12. 22 (Fri) ~ 2 0 2 4 . 02  . 17 (Sat)

Fluxus ──Tim Budden solo exhibition

2 0 2 3 .12. 22 (Fri) ~ 2 0 2 4 . 02  . 17 (Sat)

The title of this exhibition, Fluxus, invites the viewer to think about those processes that govern our lives - the passing of days, months, years; the changing of the seasons as well as the endless recycling of the forces of nature.

The paper artworks in this exhibition include an installation and stand alone works all similarly made using processes that include cutting, burning, tearing, painting and gilding paper.

The installation, Fluxus, is based on ideas formed early on in the artist’s career; the continued fascination with the cycle of life. Fluxus consists of various large and small ‘Enso’ circular shapes and a sun. It takes the form of a universe, a universal image that references the energy of the circle of life, where one thing ends and a new one begins. A place of metamorphosis and creation.

A key motif that connects the installation piece to the other artworks on display is a fascination with traditional lattice design. These works use a lattice motif which uses cut and burned paper which is also painted, gilded. The cutting and burning are destructive acts through which new forms are created. The lattice motif comes from traditional Asian architecture, especially old houses and temples.  Originally carved wooden lattice screens allowed air and light to pass through from space to space also allowing people to peer through. In these artworks the viewer can look through the holes of the lattice into another world behind. The patterned surfaces of these cut and burned lattice works explore themes of repetition, pattern, decay and visual dissonance while the shadows cast dark outlines of the artwork. In some of the works the extreme nature of burning is counteracted by the luxuriousness of gilding as well as paint giving a sense of destruction and creation at the same time.

Tim Budden

Tim is a British artist, who lives and works in Taipei. His current art is an attempt to integrate his Western upbringing with the Taiwanese/Chinese culture in which he now lives and works. Originally trained as a sculptor in the UK, Tim moved to Taipei and became inspired by traditional Chinese paper cut art. Cutting and carving paper seemed to be a natural step for him as a sculptor. The imagery in his current work refences his memories, experiences, identity and traditional art forms. Using his Western eyes to make sense of this Eastern culture in which he lives has led to his current work in which paper is cut, burned and torn.

Tim’s work has been exhibited throughout Asia and Europe. He has worked on numerous projects in Taiwan with clients such as Milk X magazine & Chanel, Fubon Art Foundation, Taiwan mobile, National Chengchi university, Twinings tea and Shiseido Cosmetics.
