The Japan Paper Museum,which was
remodelled from the former site of Japan Prince Papermaking
Company, is situated next to Asukayama Park. It is the
most significant and integrated paper museum in Japan.
Since 1950, the exhibitions in this museum are mainly
about the historical developments of western paper technology.
They also have abundant records of Japanese traditional
Washi paper and writings.
The most distinguished attraction of this museum is being
home to the Hyakuman Toudaranikyou and Echisen Washi Paper.
Hyakuman Toudaranikyou, according to the museum, is the
earliest printed material in the world.
Echisen Washi paper- made in 1925 in Fukui (a famous town
for paper making)-is a piece of paper measuring 5 square
meters and weighing 11 kilograms which was the combined
work of eight artists
Even today, this magnificent work remains a highly advanced
hand-papermaking technology.
